#NewMusicMondays: Smoove Boy Jay

This week’s review is a double hitter. Artist Smoove Boy Jay released the video for his “Chill Bill Remix” this past April and was also featured in Severe Jones’ “Feel So Right” video.

So let’s start with the “Chill Bill Remix” which is actually a freestyle to Rob $tone’s “Chill Bill” from summer 2015. The video starts with a slide of the first amendment, pretty cool I guess, I’m not completely sure what it had to do with the video exactly. But I’m all about getting a message across so cool! The video continues with Smoove Boy Jay in a park….and that’s about it! Not much to really say, the video quality was good. There were points in the video where I thought I was watching one of those old Kung Fu movies since the vocals didn’t match the video when he was mouthing the words. But then again what do you really want in a video for a freestyle. Not the best but definitely not the worst.

The second video with Severe Jones looked like the duo was having a lot of fun. The good vibes and chemistry between these two artist is what gives this video it’s entertainment value. However like the first video there was only one scene. I think the video could have had more locations or even some WOMEN!!! I mean…judging by the title I just really expected to see some women… Ok ok, we all know I might just be a little biased with the last request. But seriously, overall a good video just more locations next time guys (and possibly some females).

Lyvest Events Review – #BitchDrinks

WHERE DO I START?!!

So I officially met Chasity when I posted on FB looking for people to join me at a taping of Wild N Out in NYC. As we waited on line, she started telling us about a play she was helping with and invited us out to see it! When she explained it, I knew it sounded interesting but I NEVER expected it to be what it was…

First off, the location “Friends And Lovers” in Prospect Heights was genius. The front is a bar and the back is an open format room, which is where the play took place. The setting of the play was a bar after hours.  I met with a few friends there, one who saw the play the day prior, and the other who also did not know what to expect. Due to a random 8 minute rain storm, the play was delayed to accommodate anyone on their way. Upon entry, we were given front row seats, Thanks Chaz!

#BitchDrinks is about the many situations women endure daily. What I enjoyed most was the fact that the writing and delivery were extremely daring and unapologetic, all done in poetry. It touches on everything including sexuality, modern day feminism, social media, motherhood, sex, relationships, and more. The cast consists of 5 females: Sabrina, Elizabeth, Mone’t, Marie, and Jessica! They all played different aspects of their characters so the content varies. The show starts off with all of the women walking into a “bar”. They each have their own stories broken into about 16 different acts. The sparring comments and sarcastic exclamations from their cast mates in the background of their spotlight was purely comedic. This show was a must see for both men and women as it gives everyone an opportunity to see an honest side of women and forces you to see yourself in these struggles.

I decided to do this write up because I knew whether I liked it or not, I’d have something to say. Honestly, it really helped opened my mind and heart to come to terms with a lot of struggles I’m dealing with personally. I’d say more than anything it inspired me to go home and drink, though I didn’t get a chance to lol. The poets were amazing and the writing was on point. I was definitely surprised to hear that it was 2 years in the making. You all did an amazing job!

Thank you so much for the invitation, Chasity! It was definitely a great play, Phil & Ian. I look forward to the next one 😉

New Music Mondays! Soup – Recognize

The video for this week is “Recognize” by Soup!

The video begins with varying shots of the outdoors to match the piano keys in the intro. The video is full of quick transitions and varying outdoor shots. The song seems to be Soup warning other rappers to watch out for him and recognize that he’s dope and on the come up… Let em know Soup!! With references to major players like JayZ in the beginning of the video, I’m not sure what the intended concept for the visual to this song was but here is our review via DJ Blaq Bully on what she thought:

I have to say I struggled on the review for this video. I couldn’t really find the words to express my actual feelings for it. Then I realized, it was probably because I had none. The video quality was fine, definitely a clear picture. However, it just didn’t move me as a whole. A music video for your track should paint the visual to whatever it is you’re talking about. Whether it’s an artistic view or a realistic view of the picture you’re attempting to paint with your lyrics. This video lacked BOTH! I found myself zoning out during most of the video.

Also, some of the effects and transitions made me feel like I was going to have a seizure. Another piece of advice I’d give is to please pick better locations to shoot!!! When I am watching a music video, I would like to be entertained, informed, mesmerized and/or all of the above.

Soup, great effort! Maybe just put a little more thought into the concepts of your video next time. Keep grinding though!

New Music Mondays! JR JustReal – Invisible

Welcome to “New Music Mondays”! This is LyveLyfeRadio.com’s first recurring segment where Dyme and DJ Blaq Bully will be reviewing underground & independent artists music videos. Doing this one a little late at night but better late than never right?…

Icmg/2 Deep recording artist JR JustReal released a video mid-January to his single “Invisible”. This video was directed by Tony Picaso and produced by Ppmg Hitmand. I’ve seen him around performing at numerous music events around New York City and have become a fan of his sound.  So I was definitely excited when I saw JR’s submission for our review. Not only is the artist good, but I’m also a big supporter of the video director (Painted by Picaso) so I already pre-judged the visuals before I watched it, lol.

The basis is a heartfelt song of how he feels invisible to his girlfriend and plans to leave her because she doesn’t give him attention. It gives me an early 2000s RnB feel, think Bobby Valentino or Sammie. It starts with JR and his “girlfriend” having a disagreement about her going out with her friends rather than spending time with him when he returns from the studio. She mentions that doing music doesn’t bring home a check. Rude! Then the video is mainly scenes of her on her phone when they are together in the room, her getting cozy with a guy in the hallway, and of JR outside singing his heart out. The video is actually very simple, not too much content, not too many scenes and very easy to digest as the viewer.

What would I change about it? Don’t really think I’d change anything. I think the song is cute. I’m very easily attracted to bright colors and chaotic scenes but this is one of those chill joints you play when you’re breaking up with your boo because they messed up! So it doesn’t call for much more than presented.

Random: So I don’t know if you all caught this but the curtain in the room says Goodnight! Comment below if you saw it!

This is the first single from his LP titled “Reality Check”. Follow @_IamJust_Real on Instagram and Twitter. You can check out the video below. Make sure you tell us your thoughts in the comments section:

Make sure you come back next week to read up on another video and tune in every Thursday 8-10pm on WVMRadio.net 😉
